The Urban Nation Museum for Urban Contemporary Art in Berlin is a museum dedicated to urban art. It opened in 2017 and is located in a converted Gründerzeit-era building on Bülowstraße. By removing intermediate floors, a mezzanine-like open space is created to display large-scale sculptoral artwork. Urban Nation is funded by the Foundation Berliner Leben and with funds of Berliner Lotto Stiftung. Admission is free of charge, but donations are welcome.
The museum does not have a permanent exhibition, but rather presents changing exhibitions. The artworks, including murals and canvas pieces, are created specifically for the museum or through projects, and are often temporary. Additionally, facades around the museum are adorned with street art works, which are part of the overall concept and remain in the public space. Before creating a permanent residency, Urban Nation worked as a network, creating about 50 large-scale murals citywide. The museum has shown work by internationally renowned artists like Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Vilhs, JR, and Invader.
The museum also houses the Martha Cooper Library, with collections focused on street art and graffiti, and an artist-in-residence program. Its goal is to preserve the history of urban art, foster new talent, and strengthen community engagement.
